- Babies and children are strongly influenced by the adults in their environment so it is important for Early Years Practitioners to be exemplary role models
- Being a good role model (e.g. by displaying positivity, calmness, kindness and empathy) can encourage children to mimic the same behaviour
- It can also help children to feel safe and secure in their environment
- Positivity must be shown in facial expressions and body language – not just in words
- An openness to discuss feelings can support children to express their emotions in ways that are appropriate
- Negative behaviours, such as shouting or displays of aggression can make children feel agitated, upset and insecure
- Other negative behaviours include mood inconsistencies, being unkind and showing a lack of interest in children
- Negative behaviours can lead to children mimicking these behaviours, becoming upset or becoming withdrawn
