- Restrictive practices should only be used as a last resort
- The restrictive practice used should always be the least restrictive option
- The restrictive practice should only be in place for as long as is necessary
- Restrictive practices must never be used as a form of punishment
- Restrictive practices should always be proportionate to the need at the time
- An individual’s dignity and respect should be maintained at all times
- Because restrictive practice can be uncomfortable and traumatic for individuals, its use should be avoided wherever possible because it can cause long-term damage to an individual’s overall health and wellbeing
