Assessment criteria: 3.1 Create a language rich environment which develops the speech, language and communication of children in own setting

  • Early Years Practitioners should ensure that children have several opportunities to develop their speech, language and communication skills
  • The environment should be conducive to the development of language skills (e.g. background noise should be reduced, the child should feel comfortable etc.)
  • Similalrly, the child should feel comfortable, safe and secure in the environment
  • Children should have opportunities to interact with both adults and other children
  • Early Years Practitioners should spend time with children to help them to develop their communication skills – this includes planning appropriate activities and providing resources and equipment
  • Activities that promote the development of speech, language and communication can include:
    • Reading books
    • Exploring resources/objects
    • Singing rhymes and songs
    • Roleplay and small world play
