Unit 3.10: Develop the speech, language and communication of children

This unit is part of the Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator and has the following learning outcomes and assessment criteria:

  1. Understand theory and current frameworks which underpin children’s speech, language and communication development.
    1. Define the terms: speech, language, communication
    2. Describe theoretical perspectives in relation to speech, language and communication development
    3. Analyse how theoretical perspectives relating to speech, language and communication development inform current frameworks
  2. Understand how the Early Years practitioner supports the development of speech, language and communication of children
    1. Describe the role of the Early Years practitioner when supporting the development of speech, language and communication
    2. Describe the benefits to children’s holistic learning and development when supporting speech, language and communication development
    3. Analyse how the use of technology supports the development of speech, language and communication
  3. Be able to create a language rich environment to develop the speech, language and communication of children in own setting
    1. Create a language rich environment which develops the speech, language and communication of children in own setting
  4. Be able to lead activities which support the development of speech, language and communication of children
    1. Plan an activity which supports the development of speech, language and communication of children aged: 0-1 year 11 months, 2-2 years 11 months, 3-5 years
    2. Implement an activity which supports the development of speech, language and communication of children aged: 0-1 year 11 months, 2-2 years 11 months, 3-5 years
    3. Reflect on own role in relation to the provision for supporting speech, language and communication development in own setting
  5. Be able to critically evaluate provision for developing speech, language and communication for children in own setting
