  • Rights of individuals are enshrined in law:
    • Human Rights Act 1998 – sets out freedoms and liberties that all UK citizens are entitled to
    • Equality Act 2010 – makes it illegal to treat someone unfairly based on nine protected characteristics: age, religion, disability, marriage/civil partnership, gender, gender reassignment, pregnancy/maternity,sexual orientation and race
    • Mental Capacity Act 2005 – sets out the rights of individuals that may not have the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves
  • Some of these rights include:
    • Choice – the right to make their own choices and take risks if they wish
    • Confidentiality – the right to privacy and to have their personal information protected
    • Protection – the right to be protected from harm, abuse and neglect
    • Fair treatment – the right to not be discriminated against
    • Consultation – the right to have their views and opinions listened to, valued and considered
