Assessment criteria: 1.3 Describe areas of learning and expected early learning goals/targets within the statutory framework and curriculum study requirements for children aged from birth to seven years

- The EYFS splits learning and development for children in Early Years settings into seven areas
- The three prime areas are:
- communication and language
- physical development
- personal, social and emotional development
- In addition, the four specific areas are:
- literacy
- mathematics
- understanding the world
- expressive arts and design
- It is recommended that you read the descriptions of each of these areas as well as the related Early Learning Goals (ELGs) in the EYFS
- Children are assessed at two years with a progress check
- Children are also assessed at the start of reception – this is the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA)
- Children are also assessed at the end of the EYFS and move to the National Curriculum (Key Stage 1)
- All planning should align with the areas of development specified in the EYFS and the Early Learning Goals
