- Factors which can affect a child’s understanding of mathematical concepts can include:
- Support from adults (both in the setting and at home)
- Experiential opportunities for play and exploration
- Resources (e.g. toys, tablets etc.)
- Language, communication and cognitive skills – children that are better able to express their thoughts and understand the thoughts of others are better able to understand mathematical concepts
- Interest and enjoyment in activities
- Foundation of knowledge to build upon – some concepts may only be understood with prior knowledge and understanding
