- Following the completion of a longitudinal study, it is essential that you critically evaluate it
- This will include looking at the strengths and weaknesses of a study in several different areas
- Things that you should consider including in your critical evaluation:
- The reasons for the study and who it will benefit
- Ethical considerations (e.g. obtaining consent from prarents/carers)
- Initial information about the child (age, developmental stage, preferences, additional needs etc.)
- Frameworks used to inform the study
- Theoretical perspectives used to inform the study
- Observation methods used and why
- Assessment methods used and why
- Planned activities and how they link to the next stages of development of the child, current frameworks and theoretical perspectives
- How the child has developed over the course of the study
- The outcomes of the study
- Were there any setbacks or unexpected situations?
- The child’s holistic development and how strengths/weaknesses in a different area of development may have affected their development in the area that is the focus of your study
- The impact of play on a child’s development
- Were there any other factors that may have affected the child’s development (e.g. SEND, significant events at home etc.)
