- Confidentiality is an essential requirement of observation
- Personal information about a child, including observations, should not be shared with unauthorised persons
- Persons that information may be shared with can include the child’s parents/carers, co-workers and your manager
- Consent must be obtained from a child’s parents/carers before sharing information with others (unless there are mitigating circumstances, such as a safeguarding concern)
- Paper-based observations must be stored in a secure location (e.g. a locked filing cabinet)
- Digital observations must be stored on a secure computer system that is password-protected
- Practitioners should not talk about children in places where they may be overheard
