Unit R018: Health and well-being for child development

This unit is part of the OCR Level 1/2 Cambridge National Certificate in Child Development and has the following learning outcomes and assessment criteria:

1. Learning Outcome 1: Understand reproduction and the roles and responsibilities of parenthood
   1. The wide range of factors which affect the decision to have children
   2. Pre-conception health
   3. Roles and responsibilities of parenthood,
   4. Recognise and evaluate methods of contraception, their efficiency and reliability
   5. The structure and function of male and female reproductive systems
2. Learning Outcome 2: Understand antenatal care and preparation for birth
   1. The roles of the different health professionals supporting the pregnant mother
   2. The importance of antenatal and parenting classes
   3. Routine checks carried out at an antenatal clinic, including scans
   4. Specialised diagnostic tests
   5. The choices available for delivery
   6. The stages of labour and the methods of delivery, including pain relief
3. Learning Outcome 3: Understand postnatal checks, postnatal provision and conditions for development
   1. The postnatal checks of the newborn baby
   2. The specific needs of the pre-term (premature) baby
   3. The postnatal provision available for the mother and baby and the postnatal needs of the family
   4. Conditions for development
4. Learning Outcome 4: Understand how to recognise, manage and prevent childhood illness
   1. How immunity to disease and infection can be acquired
   2. How to recognise and treat common childhood ailments and diseases
   3. When to seek treatment by a doctor, and when emergency medical help should be sought

   5. The needs of an ill child
   6. How to prepare a child for a stay in hospital

   1. How to create a safe, child-friendly environment
