- For this assessment criterion, you will be required to demonstrate that you are able to establish a mentoring agreement with a mentee. Things that you may wish to consider are provided below.
- Ground Rules for Engagement:
- Regularity and Duration: Determine how often and for how long the mentoring sessions will occur. Ensure these are mutually convenient times.
- Communication Methods: Agree on the preferred methods of communication (face-to-face, video call, email, etc.).
- Respect and Courtesy: Emphasise the importance of mutual respect, politeness, and courtesy during discussions.
- Punctuality: Both parties should commit to being on time for scheduled meetings.
- Cancellation Policy: Establish a procedure for cancelling or rescheduling meetings, including how much notice must be given.
- Boundaries:
- Confidentiality: Agree on what information will remain confidential within the mentoring relationship and understand when confidentiality might need to be broken (for instance, when there’s a risk of harm).
- Professional Limits: Clearly define the professional nature of the relationship. Discuss that the mentoring relationship is not a personal, therapeutic, or supervisory one.
- Personal Space: Respect for personal space and time outside of agreed mentoring sessions should be established.
- Responsibilities and Autonomy of Mentee:
- Self-Reflection: The mentee should be prepared to reflect on their experiences, actions, and feelings.
- Proactivity: The mentee should take initiative in setting goals, scheduling meetings, and bringing up discussion topics.
- Honesty: The mentee should be willing to discuss openly their challenges, successes, and areas where they need support.
- Action Implementation: The mentee should commit to applying the strategies and actions discussed during mentoring sessions in their work.
- Feedback: The mentee should provide feedback to the mentor on the effectiveness of the mentoring process.
- All aspects of the mentoring agreement should be discussed openly and negotiated between the mentor and mentee to ensure mutual understanding and commitment. This agreement forms the foundation of a productive and successful mentoring relationship.
