Learning outcome: 1 Understand team leadership in adult care
Assessment criteria: 1.3 Analyse the key features of effective team leadership and how it might be adapted for different teams.
- Key features of effective team leadership include:
- Mutual trust and respect – leaders must promote bonds of trust and respect between team members and themselves
- Effective communication – includes listening to and valuing the views of others as well as skills in compromise and negotiation
- Shared goals and values – although team members will have different perspectives, it is important that they are in agreement about their purpose
- Positivity – team leaders should foster positivity amongst the team members and inspire them to achieve their potential
- Support – team leaders should provide support, encouragement and guidance to the team members
- If we look at Tuckman’s Stages of Team Development, we can see that newly formed teams usually require a lot of direction and support, but when they become established and are clear about their purpose, the leader can take more of a back-seat and support the team to be more autonomous
