Assessment criteria: 1.6 Outline a range of different learning styles
- The VARK model was first developed by Fleming and Miller in 1992
- It identifies four styles of learning. They are:
- Visual learners absorb knowledge from images such as maps, graphs and charts
- Auditory learners absorb knowledge through their sense of hearing such as via lectures or discussions
- Read/Write learners absorb knowledge best through reading and writing about the subject
- Kinesthetic learners absorb knowledge by doing something, such as carrying out a task
- By knowing your own and your team’s learning styles you can optimise the efficiency of learning and development opportunities
- These learning styles are not mutually exclusive, however, individuals usually have one learning style that is more effective than the others
- Other learning style theories include the works of Kolb and Honey and Mumford
