- It is important that the individual still retains the right to autonomy when deciding how active participation will be implemented
- Their views, wishes and choices relating to the level of active participation should be respected
- Similarly, the views of others including the individual’s family and other healthcare professionals should also be respected
- Communication skills, including negotiation and compromise, should be used to reach a consensus about how active participation should be implemented
