Unit 383 Promoting health and well-being of individuals with learning disabilities and/or individuals with autism

This unit is one of the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care Optional Units and has the following learning outcomes and assessment criteria:

  1. 1 Understand how to promote physical and emotional well-being to minimise health inequalities
    1. 1.1 Describe factors that contribute to physical and emotional well-being
    2. 1.2 Describe activities that may contribute to physical and emotional well-being
    3. 1.3 Outline possible health inequalities affecting individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism
    4. 1.4 Describe reasonable adjustments that can be made to support individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism to access health and well-being services
  2. 2 Understand common health issues for individuals with learning disabilities and/or individuals with autism
    1. 2.1 Describe common health issues and their symptoms
    2. 2.2 Explain the importance of health checks for the individual
    3. 2.3 Describe reasonable adjustments that can be made it ensure individuals can access their health checks
  3. 3 Understand common mental ill health issues and the risks of diagnostic overshadowing
    1. 3.1 Describe common mental health issues
    2. 3.2 Explain the factors that may contribute to diagnostic overshadowing
    3. 3.3 Describe potential consequences of diagnostic overshadowing of their disability without exploring other health issues.
  4. 4 Be able to promote healthy lifestyles and well-being for individuals with a learning disability and or autism
    1. 4.1 Describe ways to promote well-being through healthy lifestyles
    2. 4.2 Explain the principles of a healthy diet to an individual with communication differences
    3. 4.3 Support an individual with communication differences to make informed choices about their lifestyle
    4. 4.4 Outline how to encourage individuals to follow a healthy lifestyle
  5. 5 Be able to recognise and advise others on how individuals may express pain
    1. 5.1 Describe ways in which individuals may communicate that they are in pain
    2. 5.2 Advise others on ways that individuals may express pain
    3. 5.3 Describe actions to take if an individual is expressing pain
  6. 6 Understand the risk of over-medication for individuals with a learning disability and/or autism
    1. 6.1 Outline why individuals with a learning disability and/or autism may experience of over medication
    2. 6.2 Describe the potential consequences of over medication
    3. 6.3 Describe what actions to take if there is the potential that medication is being prescribed inappropriately
