- The EYFS recognises that formative (ongoing) assessment will be part of the day-to-day activities of an Early Years Practitioner
- However, this should not result in long breaks away from the children so the professional judgment of the practioner is considered adequate and reams of evience is not required
- The EYFS requires that practitioners perform a formal progress check at age 2 and provide a written summary to their parents/carers
- The EYFS also requires Assessment at the start of the reception year – the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). This is detailed in Annexe B of the EYFS.
- The EYFS also requires Assessment at the end of the EYFS – the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP) which “provides parents and carers, practitioners and teachers with a wellrounded picture of a child’s knowledge, understanding and abilities, their attainment against expected levels, and their readiness for year 1“
