- Mathematics is present in many areas of everyday life and children will be exposed to mathematical concepts from an early age
- Some examples include:
- Concepts relating to area, such as a jug being full or empty
- Patterns, such as ordering blocks in a red, yellow, red, yellow etc. sequence
- Time as expressed in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months etc. as well as day and night
- Spacial awareness – the space around a child and also lengths both measured (e.g. a meter) and more vague (e.g. near and far)
- Comparisons, such as bigger and smaller, higher and lower, heavier and lighter etc.
