  • The way that practitioners interact with children can affect their development of language and communication
  • Children should have a close relationship with their Key Person and other practitioners so that they feel comfortable and ready to learn
  • Practitioners should askchildren questions and encourage them to express themselves verbally
  • Practitioners should ensure that they use a gentle and calming tone of voice, open body language and friendly facial expressions
  • Practitioners should remain positive and patient during interactions with children and be genuinely interested in the interaction
  • Mirroring can be used to interact with children (e.g. smiling when the child smiles, copying the childs actions etc.)
  • Recasting is a method of aiding a child’s understanding of language and grammar by repeating an incorrect phrase in it’s correct form (e.g. if the child says “i gotted it!”, the adult would recast as “Yes, you got it”) – recasts should be stated immediately after the child has spoken and retain the same meaning
