  • Pre-linguistic stage – 0 to 12 months
    • 0 to 3 months – recognises the voices of carers and different tones of voice, cries when hungry/tired/distressed, coos, smiles and gurgles
    • 3 to 6 months – enjoys music and repetitive rhymes/actions, babbles, laughs, chuckles
    • 6 to 9 months – recognises own name and some simple words, pointing, word imitation
    • 9 to 12 months – understands more words, can make repetitive words, uses gestures, can respond to simple instructions
  • Linguistic stage – 15 months to 8 years
    • 15 to 18 months – has a vocabulary of around 10 words, may point when saying a word, may use intonation
    • 18 months to 2 years – vocabulary and sentence length increases, two words can be used together, questioning begins, plurals may be used and there will be grammatical errors
    • 3 to 4 years – vocabulary and sentence structure increases, pronouns are used correctly, can imitate speech of others accurately, is understandable to strangers, talks to self during play, able to narrate, describe and express feelings
    • 5 to 8 years – has a wide range of vocabulary, can construct more complex sentences and can express opinions, is aware of mistakes in the speech of others, able to read and write at an age-appropriate level
