- The text of the EYFS refers to a few strategies relating to the development of emergent literacy but does not give detailed guidance
- E.g. Section 1.6: “Language comprehension (necessary for both reading and writing) starts from birth. It only develops when adults talk with children about the world around them and the books (stories and non-fiction) they read with them, and enjoy rhymes, poems and songs together“
- Other strategies that you may use in your setting could include:
- Playing I-Spy or other sound/word games
- Songs/rhymes
- Provision of a variety of books and reading materials
- Provision of mark-making and writing materials
- Scribing and modelling good reading/writing techniques
