- An enabling environment is a space that facilitates a child’s learning and development by providing children with varied activities, support from adults and that is safe and well-managed.
- Some of the characteristics of an enabling indoor environment include:
- A space which is safe and in which the children feel safe
- A space in which children can explore and develop their independence
- A space in which resources and activities are easily accessible to children
- A space in which a varied range of activities are planned that support children’s learning, challenge them and provide opportunities for socialising and communication
- A space in which activities are planned with the individual child’s age, developmental stage and unique interests in mind
