  • Some of the ways that an enabling indoor environment meets the age stage and needs of children include:
    • Ensuring the environment is safe (e.g. preventing babies from having access to toys with small parts that they may swallow, ensuring older children are not able to get out of the setting on their own etc.)
    • The presence of adults who are available to support children with their development (e.g. comforting a crying child, extending a child’s knowledge by showing them how to do something new with an activity they are showing particular interest etc.)
    • The promotion of choice and independence (e.g. providing a wide variety of age-appropriate activities that children may participate in, praising children’s efforts towards independence etc.)
    • The provision of accessible resources and equipment (e.g. low-level desks and sinks, play resources being stored in a place that children can reach etc.)
