- A longitudinal study is research carried out over a set period of time
- In Early Years settings, a longitudinal study can be used to observe, assess and plan for the development of a child
- It can be used to:
- Identify their current stage of development
- Plan for their next stage of development
- Ensure that a child at the correct stage of development for their age
- Identify any development issues and facilitate early intervention where required
- Assess the child against the EYFS framework
- Demonstrate to OFSTED that children are supported in their development
- Maintain a record of the child’s development over time
