  • For this assesment criterion, you will be required to implement the activities that you planned for in the previous section
  • Activities that support the development of speech, language and communication should be age-appropriate and, as always, take into account the child’s interests so that it is enjoyable for them
  • 0 to 1 year 11 months – children in this age range enjoy repitition and a peaceful environment. From around 7-8 months, the adult working with them should be well-known to them (ideally their Key Person) and interact with them using strong facial expressions and soft tones of voice. The practitioner should be prepared to end or change the activity when the child loses interest.
  • 2 to 2 years 11 months – children in this age range are often very animated (e.g. using their hands when talking etc.) and restless. Therefore, activities which involve sitting still or being attentive for long periods of time are unsuitable. They may be rushed and unclear in their speech, however, over time their Key Person and others who work closely with them will begin to understand the nuances of their speech.
  • 3 to 5 years – children in this age range will be able to listen for longer periods but must be given plenty of opportunities to interact and use language themselves. Activities should be prepared for in advance with all resources readily available. Children will begin to have developed cooperative skills, such as working in groups, sharing and taking turns.
