  • Settings should ensure that there are plenty of opportinities for children to participate in play activities
  • Early years setting will incorporate play into daily activities, schools will do so in a more structured way but also ensure free play is available during lunch/breaktimes
  • Play should be child-led and take their individual interests into account
  • Settings should have plenty of resources available to allow children opportunities to play including toys, books and equipment
  • Children should have opportunities to play outdoors – if the setting does not have an outdoor area, regular trips to local parks and other outdoor space should be provided
  • Early years settings should also promote play to others, including parents and may also provide toys for children to take home to play with
