  • Bonding can be described as a parent’s intinctie love for their child, which can grow during pregnancy from feeling kicks or viewing ultrasound pictures. It can also develop after the child is born, such as when theparent first holds their baby, and during their first year of life.
  • Attachment is the relationship a child has with their primary caregiver(s) and, to a lesser extent, secondary caregivers, such as grandparents or their key person at a nursery. During the first few months, babies will have ‘indiscriminate attachments’, that is they will prefer to be in the company of humans rather than left alone, but who the humans are will not matter. At around 8 months, babies will develop stronger attachments to their primary caregivers and miss or become distressed when separated from them.
  • Developing secure relationships takes time for children and they will often be wary at first. They will observe new people and watch how their caregivers interact with them. Over time, the child will begin to interact more with others and develop relationships with them, providing the adult provides positive care and security.
