- A Key Person system is a legal requirement for early years settings
- The role of a Key Person is to establish and maintain a strong relationship with a child and their family that is based on mutual trust and respect
- This helps the child to feel secure in the setting as well as establishing a primary point of contact for the child’s family
- This relationship iniitiates during the first meeting with the child and their family before they begin attending the setting – the Key Person should be actively involved in discussing the child and their family’s needs, wishes and preference
- The Key Person should be the main person that supports the child with their personal care and provide emotional support, as well as spending time playing and interacting with them – this can strengthen the bond between them
- The Key Person will take a primary role in the child’s observations, assessments and planning – this includes planning activities that will support the child’s development
