Assessment criteria: 2.1 Outline hygienic practice when: preparing formula feeds, sterilising equipment

• Preparing formula
  • Wash hands
  • Use sterilised bottles and teats
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions – use correct measurements
  • Make up feeds one at a time, when required
  • Use freshly boiled water from the tap (not reboiled water)
  • Let the feed cool for no more than 30 minutes
• Sterilising equipment
  • Wash hands
  • Clean bottles in hot, soapy water as soon as possible after feeds
  • Use a bottle brush and teat brush
  • Rinse before sterilising
  • Follow sterilser manufacturer’s instructions
  • If possible, leave bottles in steriliser until ready to use them
  • Assemble bottles on sterile surface
